Azercell asks govt for 4G license

Azerbaijani cellular operator Azercell has asked the communications ministry for authorization to introduce the fourth generation (4G) services, TeliaSonera Eurasia Vice President Halim Ates told journalists on Wednesday.

Teliasonera is one of the shareholders of Azercell.

Ates said introducing the 4G standard will allow to carry out a more efficient tariff policy and reduce costs for data services.

The number of users of 3G services over the Azercell network has reached 200,000, he said.

Previously, another local mobile operator, Bakcell, asked the government for authorization to introduce 4G services.

In early November the communications ministry issued a license to provide 3G services to both Azercell and Bakcell. Prior to the two companies, Azerfon received a relevant license.
