Imports of Kazakh grain suspended
Azerbaijan will not be able to purchase grain from Kazakhstan in
the coming months.
The country's government passed a decision on Tuesday to halt exports of the product until September, citing the need to ensure its food safety.
The Central Asian state has been selling 300,000 tons of wheat to the South Caucasus republic annually. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan buy 200,000 tons.
Kazakhstan's agriculture minister said Monday that the country could export as much as 12 million tons of wheat a year.
The Azerbaijan Ministry of Agriculture has said Kazakhstan‘s suspension of exports would not cause a hike in domestic prices.
A department head at the ministry, Sabir Valiyev, said the country had enough grain reserves that would suffice till September, when domestically-produced grain would become available.
