Azerbaijan says not planning customs checkpoint with Iran
BAKU – Azerbaijan is not considering a joint customs checkpoint with Iran, State Customs Committee (SCC) Chairman Aydin Aliyev told journalists on Tuesday.
Iranian Ambassador in Baku Mahammad Bagir Bahrami earlier said that the Azerbaijani, Iranian and Turkish foreign ministers agreed during their talks in Orumiyeh, Iran in mid-April that a joint customs checkpoint would be set up on the Azerbaijani-Iranian border and that documents would be inspected under the "single window" system. Ambassadors have been instructed to work on the issue, Bahrami added.
"There are many difficult issues in terms of holding inspections on the single window principle. One of them is that in what country’s territory they will be held," Aliyev said.
He said according to Azerbaijani legislation, only the SCC can deal with customs control in the country.
"Another issue is that if there are violations on the territory of Azerbaijan or Iran, how and under which country’s jurisdiction they will be considered," Aliyev said.
