Azeri construction firm`s staff stage strike
BAKU – About 150 employees of Akkord, one of Azerbaijan’s biggest construction companies, went on a strike Tuesday over what they say is violation of their rights.
The strikers, who are building a cement plant in the country’s western Gazakh region, demanded timely payment of their salaries and reinstatement of 22 dismissed workers.
Shohrat Mammadzada, an Akkord employee, has told Radio Liberty that the workers’ spat with their managers had reached a boiling point on Monday.
"Yesterday the food served to us was inedible, so we didn’t have it. But the managers came out and said ‘that’s all we have, you can take it or leave it’."
Asaf Gasymov, one of the dismissed workers, said: "Some of us had stomach ache or threw up. So, we just went home to eat and then didn’t come back to work because it was too late. And 22 people were sacked after that."
The sacked workers reportedly met with Akkord executives on Tuesday morning. The managers hired all the 22 workers back and pledged to pay all of the strikers’ salaries soon.
