Aliyev: Azeri economy growing despite global crunch

BAKU – The Azerbaijani economy grew in 2009 and 2010 despite the global financial crisis, posting an increase of 15 percent, President Ilham Aliyev said on Tuesday.

Addressing a conference in Baku devoted to the government’s program on social and economic development of the regions for 2009-2013, President Aliyev said Azerbaijan will successfully meet all of its outlined goals.

"With the development of our public and private sectors, we can invest more in other countries. This will expand Azerbaijan’s international cooperation."

He said a total of $15.4 billion was invested in Azerbaijan in 2010. In the past six to seven years, over 2,000 schools and more than 400,000 health institutions have been opened in the country.

The president praised progress achieved last year in implementing the state regional development program, stressing that Azerbaijan is the fastest-growing economy in the world.
