Regional states agree to build railway
Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia have agreed the terms for establishing a consortium on building a railway from Kazvin to the town of Astara on the Iranian-Azeri border through Resht within the North-South international transport corridor project. The heads of the three countries' railway administrations signed a relevant Memorandum of Understanding in the Iranian capital Tehran on Saturday.
"We agreed today that the joint taskforce will have a month to draft the required documents and another month for their consideration, in order to further sign a contract," president of the Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin, who represented Moscow in the talks, told reporters.
Yakunin said that Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia had once already agreed to cooperate in constructing this section of the rail line.
Assessing prospects for the North-South project, he said its implementation would allow to transport at least 20 million tons more of consignments from Helsinki to the Indian Ocean.
