Aliyev sets goal to fully meet demand for food

BAKU – President Ilham Aliyev has said Azerbaijan should be able to supply itself with basic food by domestic production, and tremendous success has been achieved to reach this goal.

President Aliyev said the country is currently capable of meeting its demand in the plant-growing and poultry farming sectors by 70 percent.

"Azerbaijan is meeting its needs for meat, dairy products, vegetable oils, sugar and other basic foods, we can say, by 100 percent or 90-95 percent," Aliyev said in a meeting with residents of the western Samukh region on Wednesday.

He said it is alarming that the food safety issue could come to the forefront on the global scale.

"In this case, people could certainly face dire challenges. We have to make sure that 100 percent of food consumed in Azerbaijan is produced in the country. In addition to that, we have to access foreign markets with our goods."
