Tehran hosts talks on North-South project
TEHRAN – Azerbaijan Railways is attending a trilateral meeting with Russia and Iran to discuss the North-South international transport corridor, a major route to link Asia and Europe, the state-run company said in a statement released Monday.
The meeting underway in Tehran focuses on the issues of establishing a joint venture for the construction of the Rasht-Astara (Iran) - Astara (Azerbaijan) railway.
Deputy Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways Igbal Huseynov and his accompanying delegation is attending the discussions, which will end on Tuesday.
The North-South project envisions connecting Europe by railways, roads, sea and air to India and southeastern Asia through Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran. Most of the operations under the $400 million project are to be carried out in Iran, which has no railway link to its border with Azerbaijan.
The agreement on the project was signed by Russia, Iran, India and Oman in 2001. Azerbaijan joined the project in 2005.
