27 October 2010 00:57 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU – Shadow economy accounts for about 9 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Azerbaijan, the government estimates.

State Statistics Committee chairman Arif Valiyev told a press conference Tuesday that unreported economy mainly pertains to home-made goods and services. For instance, such activity includes baking bread at home for further sale, some repair services and tutoring schoolchildren at home.

"Registering the turnover in such areas is essentially impossible," Valiyev said.

Azerbaijan’s GDP made up $29.3 billion manats (over $36.6 billion) in January-September 2010.
