Soros fund spent over $3.3m in Azerbaijan in ‘09
The US Open Society Institute - Assistance (Soros) Foundation’s
representation in Azerbaijan spent over $3.342 million in 2009, its
executive director has said.
Farda Asadov told a news conference Friday that $2.306m, or 69% of the amount, was channeled into projects on allocating grants. Operational projects accounted for $571,000, or 17% of the sum, while administrative expenses made up $464,000, or 14%.
According to Asadov, grant allocations, including the expenses incurred while implementing programs, were directed to healthcare (26%), civil society development (14%), transparency (11%), public administration (8%), mass media (7%), the law and rights protection (6%), culture (6%), and other fields.
Asadov noted that 95% of the grants were allotted to organizations, while the remaining 5% benefited private individuals who were selected through tenders.
He said the same amount of assistance has been designated in the OSI’s 2010 budget.
Zardusht Alizada, who previously chaired the OSI board in Azerbaijan, said this year the foundation reduced the amount designated for education in the country, and no funds were allocated for environmental protection at all.*
