IFAD head praises Azerbaijan’s poverty reduction efforts
Kanayo Nwanze, President of the International Fund for Agricultural
Development (IFAD), visiting Azerbaijan, has highly assessed
poverty reduction efforts in the country.
"One of the key pre-requisites for ensuring food safety is political stability, and Azerbaijan has achieved that," Nwanze said.
"A great deal has been done in Azerbaijan to reduce poverty, which is exemplary for the region. Political stability and food safety should go in parallel, in which case it is possible to achieve a solution of the problem."
The IFAD head noted, further, that climate change has taken a toll on the food shortage issue in the world. He said eliminating the inflicted damage and reaching a solution overall requires considerable investment, which, in turn, requires political will and political decisions.
While in Baku, Nwanze is expected to hold meetings with Azerbaijani leaders as well as attend the 35th Annual Meeting of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Board of Governors to be held from June 23-24.
To date, IFAD has supported four projects and programs in Azerbaijan, with a total investment of $48.1 million.
IFAD, an international financial institution and a specialized UN agency based in Rome, has invested over $12 billion in grants and low-interest loans to developing countries since 1978, empowering some 370 million people to break out of poverty.*
