Military official accuses Armenian body of torturing POWs

28 November 2007 16:26 (UTC+04:00)
The Armenian taskforce on captives and hostages has a hand in torturing Azerbaijani POWs, Deputy Military Prosecutor Ilham Mammadov has said.
"286 Armenians who committed war crimes during the Garabagh war have been identified. 29 of them are accused of subjecting Azerbaijani detainees and hostages to unbelievable torture. It is disappointing that several of these individuals are members of the Armenian taskforce on captives and hostages, and one of them is its chairman," Mammadov said.
The deputy prosecutor heads a group investigating crimes perpetrated during the Armenia-Azerbaijan hostilities over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh. He said that the guilt of some of the criminals has been proven under international law and a search for them announced.
"I hope we will be able to bring them to Azerbaijan and the criminals will receive due punishment," he added.
Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan's internationally-recognized territory since the early 1990s, in defiance of international law and UN resolutions. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but peace talks have been fruitless so far and refugees remain stranded.
