Azeri citizen turns down Latvian township purchase
The Azerbaijani citizen who has won an auction for purchasing a Soviet-era military township in Latvia has turned down the acquisition.
The reason for Mahammad Gurbanov’s decision is unknown, according to Latvia’s Мixnews.lv news portal. He will not be reimbursed for the $20,700 mandatory down payment transferred for the Skrunda-1 facility.
Russia’s Alexeyevskoe Service had initially won the February 5 auction, having bidden $3 million. However, Gurbanov was named the winner after the company’s bid was invalidated due to its failure to transfer the down payment worth $190,000 by the February 19 deadline. Due to the winner’s refusal to buy the township, however, the Latvian agency in charge of privatization is preparing to hold a repeat auction.*
