Azercell to get 3G license soon: minister
Azerbaijan’s leading cellular operator, Azercell, will soon be
granted a license to provide services based on cutting-edge 3G
technologies, according to Minister of Communications and
Information Technologies, Ali Abbasov.
Abbasov said the company had submitted all the required documentation for obtaining a license. He noted, however, that talks with Azercell had revealed the need to prepare several more documents.
"Once Azercell has collected all the documents, it will be granted a respective 3G license," the minister said.
The cellular operator said earlier this week that, though it has been ready to introduce 3G technologies for two years, its applications to government agencies over obtaining the license remained unanswered.
According to Abbasov, the communications ministry is also considering an appeal from Bakcell.
Azerfon, another local cellular operator, has already obtained a 3G license and intends to launch the service by the end of 2009.
The standard, developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), enables the use of high-speed data transfer, video-phones and mobile TV services.*
