Azerbaijan, Britain seek to boost business
Azerbaijani and British businessmen held their
second meeting at the Hyatt Regency Hotel of Baku on Monday, which
drew representatives of 20 companies operating in a slew of fields
of Britain’s economy. Azerbaijan was represented by the
International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA), the country’s leading bank,
the Azerbaijan Export and Investment Promotion Foundation
(AZPROMO), AZMECO and other companies and organizations.
British entrepreneurs highlighted IBA’s role in the development of bilateral relations and congratulated Jahangir Hajiyev, chairman of the IBA steering board, on his recent conferral with the Queen Victoria Commemorative Medal, which honors successful businesspeople’s contribution to promoting high values in doing business.
Hajiyev said in his remarks that the Azerbaijani economy has been growing rapidly in the past years despite the world financial crisis. He stressed active involvement of British companies in boosting the South Caucasus republic’s oil sector. Hajiyev also spoke about the potential of the national non-oil sector and suggested that British firms vigorously invest in various fields of the Azerbaijani economy.
Caroline Brown, British Ambassador to Azerbaijan, said her government was paying close attention to the development of economic partnership with Azerbaijan.
"The British government focuses on partnership ties with Azerbaijan in four key areas. These include the activity of British commercial or business circles here, initiatives on drawing new investment and creating new opportunities for British businessmen in the country. The second priority is ensuring energy security as well as discovering new hydrocarbon reserves in Azerbaijan as part of these efforts; their utilization, refining and further export. The third area is conducting joint anti-terrorism activities. The fourth area is developing partnership ties in introducing European standards of business quality in Azerbaijan."
The ambassador said all these activities will be carried out with the aid of the European Union.
"Azerbaijan is maintaining major partnership relations with many EU countries, and real results have been achieved," Brown said.
