A regional workshop on “Increasing capacity on the use of intelligent transport technologies to reduce gas emissions that create a thermal effect in the transport sector of the Asian region” started in Baku on October 1.
The event has been organized by Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies jointly with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The two-day workshop aims to exchange knowledge and experience in reducing greenhouse gas emissions that create a thermal effect in the transport sector, conduct analysis to prevent risk factors and organize discussions to take the necessary operational measures.
The representatives of the relevant authorities of Azerbaijan, countries of the region (Russia, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan), the UNESCAP secretariat, as well as experts from the United States and South Korea, attended the event.
Shahin Ismayilov, Head of Department of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies, UNESCAP representative Changju Lee and representative of the Asian Development Bank Ki Joon Kim delivered opening speeches.
Later, Vladimir Kryuchkov, CEO of ITS Russia, made a presentation on intelligent transport systems.
Andrew Bevan, Smart Mobility Director, in turn, made a presentation on “New Development in the field of Intelligent Transport Systems: Technologies and Applications”.
The event participants discussed increasing the capacity of intelligent transport technologies to reduce the emission of gases that create a thermal effect in the transport sector of the Asian region.
The event continued with presentations by representatives of countries in the region.
The Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies is one of the executive structures for the implementation of the action plan of the "State Program for Road Safety in Azerbaijan for 2019-2023", approved by the presidential decree dated December 27, 2018.
The main goal is to take the necessary measures to reduce the number of road traffic accidents, in particular, road accidents with fatalities and damage to health, as well as reduce the amount of damage to the economy and ecology of the country.
According to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, today Azerbaijan's gas emissions total 51 million tons per year, which is about 30 percent lower than in 1990. The country hopes to reduce this figure by another 35 percent by 2030 as a contribution to global efforts against climate change, in accordance with the requirements of the Paris climate agreement. One of the ways to achieve this goal is to use environmentally friendly transport. The issues of stimulating the use of environmentally friendly vehicles are included in the State Program on Road Safety for 2019-2023.
