Trade turnover between Georgia, Azerbaijan exceeds $ 97mln

The trade turnover between Georgia and Azerbaijan amounted to about $ 97.6 million in January. This is stated in the primary report of the National Statistics Office of Georgia, Report informs.

Last month, the share of Azerbaijan in the total trade of the neighboring country amounted to 11.8 percent. Thus, Azerbaijan became Georgia’s second largest trading partner after Turkey.

In the reporting period, in annual comparison, Georgia's exports to Azerbaijan increased by 70.4 percent. Along with the fact that the share of Azerbaijan in total exports of Georgia was 14.4 percent, it became the second largest partner of this country in terms of exports after Russia.

In January, Azerbaijan imported goods worth $ 63.1 million to Georgia, which is 7.3 percent less than last year. The share of Azerbaijan in total imports of Georgia amounted to 10.7 percent. With this indicator, Azerbaijan has become the third main partner of the neighboring country for imports after Turkey and China.

Last month, Georgia’s total foreign trade grew by 1.2 percent year-on-year and amounted to $ 826.8 million. Exports of the neighboring country amounted to $ 238.8 million (+ 7.2 percent), and imports $ 588 million (-1.1 percent).

Speaking about oil and gas sectors, there are should be noted oil and gas export volumes to Georgia.

In January, Georgia imported oil and oil products worth $ 4.7 million from Azerbaijan. Total volume of oil and oil products exported by Azerbaijan to the neighboring country amounted to 9.3 million tons, which is 356,500 tons or 3.6 percent less than the same indicator for 2018.

In January 2018, Georgia imported from Azerbaijan 9.6 million tons of oil and oil products in the amount of $ 5.7 million . Georgia imported 260,699.6 tons of natural gas from Azerbaijan in the amount of $ 42.9 million. On an annualized basis, the volume of gas imports from Azerbaijan increased by 26,156.6 cubic meters or 11.1 percent, in value terms - by $ 1.4 million.

Azerbaijan and Georgia are closely cooperating in the economic sphere. The main export routes for the supply of oil and gas from Azerbaijan pass through the territory of Georgia via the Baku – Tbilisi – Ceyhan and Baku – Supsa oil pipelines and the Baku – Tbilisi – Erzurum gas pipeline.

Today, the sides are implementing a joint project on the opening of a railway connection on the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars route, under which Azerbaijan provided Georgia with a loan of $ 775 million.

SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) is an active part in the energy market of Georgia.

Azerbaijan maintains the second position in the list of the largest trade partners of Georgia. Georgia exports cement, locomotives and other vehicles, mineral and chemical fertilizers, mineral waters, alcoholic beverages, glass and glass products, as well as medicines to Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan, in turn, exports oil and oil products, natural gas, plastic products, furniture and building structures to Georgia.
