Latvia seeks to join TRACECA
Latvia has said it intends to join TRACECA, the
Europe-Caucasus-Asia transport corridor.
The route has major advantages, and, by joining the project, the Baltic state could gain lucrative access to Asia, said the country`s transport minister, Kaspars Gerhards, who visited Azerbaijan last week.
Latvia is expected to attend an upcoming meeting of the TRACECA intergovernmental commission as an observer, Gerhards said.
The Latvian minister noted that Azerbaijan represents a strategic hub both for TRACECA and other transport corridors, adding that cooperation with the South Caucasus republic could bring considerable benefits to Latvia.
Azerbaijan is located at the crossroads of the East-West transit routes.
TRACECA comprises 13 states - Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Moldova, Ukraine, and Romania. The European Commission-funded project aims to restore the historic Silk Road. Its first summit was held in Baku in 1998.
