World airline execs mull cargo transport in Baku

10 June 2009 13:46 (UTC+04:00)
Airline executives and officials from a number of countries of Europe, Asia and elsewhere gathered in Baku on Tuesday to discuss the impact of the world economic crisis, current standing of the industry and ways of solving its most pressing problems. The Caspian Air Cargo summit was attended by some 50 representatives of air transport companies and government agencies dealing with the field.
Arif Mammadov, the Director of the State Civil Aviation Administration, told reporters that the surging number of passengers and bulk of transported consignments has increased foreign airlines` interest in Azerbaijan. He pointed to remarkable progress in cargo transportation through Azerbaijani airways.
"Our cargo terminal has already started operating to 100% of its capacity. Expanding that terminal is currently planned," Mammadov said.
He emphasized that, though the global economic downturn has caused a 25% reduction in the volume of cargo transported by air, it has not considerably affected Azerbaijan`s cargo transportation. Moreover, launching the mentioned terminal, which is located in a free economic zone, will allow increasing cargo transit.
