Azerbaijan turned into power exporter - minister
Azerbaijan, which has been importing electricity,
has now turned into a power exporter, Minister of Industry and
Energy Natig Aliyev has said.
The South Caucasus republic has been exporting electricity to neighboring Iran and Turkey during the past two years. Furthermore, the country intends to bring its production of electricity to 10,000 MWt in the foreseeable future, Aliyev told a meeting of the CIS Electrical Energy Council in Baku last week.
The minister also said that a North-South international corridor will be created with Russia and Iran to increase the exchange of energy with Azerbaijan`s neighbors.
"The implementation of key electric power projects is in store in the region, and the North-South energy corridor is one of them. President Ilham Aliyev has reached agreements with the leaders of both Russia and Iran to that end. This project will bring tremendous benefits both to Azerbaijan and neighboring states."
In remarks at the meeting, chairman of the CIS energy council, Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko, also pointed out the importance of the corridor. According to Shmatko, there is vast potential for beefing up energy exchange between Azerbaijan and Russia.
"The exchange of electric power between our countries is at a very low level. There are currently good opportunities for our electricity systems` operation in parallel, because they can perfectly substitute each other from the technical viewpoint. This necessitates building new lines and power stations," said Shmatko.
Azerbaijan and Russia currently exchange energy only in case a dire need arises for electric power.
Speakers at the Council meeting also emphasized that, in the future, a circular power system is to be created around the Caspian Sea which will boost energy cooperation among the coastal nations.
