Nakhchivan to make cars jointly with China`s Lifan
Azerbaijan and China will join forces to manufacture
modern automobiles in southwestern Azerbaijan this year. The
vehicles, to be produced with Chinese automaker, Lifan Group, at a
new plant in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, will be put on
sale as early as August or September. The Nakhchivan plant and
Lifan have signed a paper to begin assembling autos.
The Azerbaijani plant`s specialists are due to visit China in the coming days to study their production process. By July, spare parts for the assembly of the first group of 108 automobiles will be delivered to the autonomous republic through the territory of neighboring Iran.
Chinese engineers visiting Azerbaijan have toured the automobile plant that is under construction in Nakhchivan. Construction at the facility, which started in 2006, are drawing to a close. Upon completion, the required equipment will be installed there in cooperation with Chinese specialists. The projected annual capacity of the new plant is approximately 1,500 cars.
The foreign experts concluded that the economic crisis that has affected economies worldwide, including the automaking industry, is not felt in Azerbaijan and expressed satisfaction with the work underway at the Nakhchivan plant. The cars will be priced to be affordable for local customers.
"Our automobiles are very cost-efficient and convenient. These cars are very cheap in China in comparison with other brands, moreover they are of a high quality. I think Azerbaijanis will be interested in [buying] them," a Lifan representative said, though he did not elaborate on the price.
Prices for Lifan cars on world markets range from $8,000 to $20,000, depending on the model.
