6,000 people lost their jobs in Azerbaijan in January-February due to the economic crisis, according to the State Statistics Committee.
Arif Valiyev, the Committee chairman, noted that the elimination of jobs took place for a number of related reasons. As a result, some businesses sent their employees on leave while other businesses dismissed them without citing any reasons. Valiyev did not rule out that more employees could face future dismissals.
The Committee chairman said the precise number of people who lost their jobs in the first quarter of 2009 would be announced at a cabinet meeting to be chaired by the president in the coming days.
Further, Valiyev said that the number of local businesses that shut down in Azerbaijan due to the economic crisis has not yet been determined. "This data will be announced when the outcomes of Q1 are divulged. The calculations based on the information collected from the regions and enterprises are currently underway."
