Mini-Note laptop sales to climb
Sales of small laptop computers are expected to climb in Azerbaijan in 2009-2010. Hewlett-Packard, the world`s largest computer maker, has registered its Mini-Note trademark for this purpose, according to the ICT Information Center.
The new Mini-Note, which weighs just over a kilogram, will be available to consumers at popular terms as part of the People`s Computer project being implemented jointly by the Ministries of Communications and Information Technologies and Education, and the Microsoft Corporation. This project aims to enable low-income families to benefit from computers. The overall value of the agreement has not yet been determined.
There are currently 3-4 PCs per 100 people in Azerbaijan, the communications ministry estimates. But, if the People`s Computer project is successful, it will be possible to increase this figure more than five-fold.
Although allocation of loans for concessions had been initially envisioned under the project, the disbursals have been postponed due to the ongoing economic crisis.
Rasim Bakhshi, HP`s business development manager for Azerbaijan, says that mini-laptops are the best choice for certain groups of the population due to their functionality, as the options available on such computers adequately meet users` needs in most cases.
The rising popularity of miniature notebooks in the domestic market is due to a number of advantages offered to consumers. Such PCs are sold at attractive prices. Additionally, they are rather small, which could be a crucial factor for an Azerbaijani consumer. Moreover, despite the small size, it is possible to use MS Office programs on HP`s Mini-Note, which increases their productivity.
According to research conducted by the international analytical group, DisplaySearch, worldwide sales of mini-laptops are predicted to increase 65% this year, in comparison with 2008, to reach 27 million units. The tendency of rising sales is expected to be seen more in 2009 in countries with lower consumer incomes than in Western economies.
Mini-laptops are mostly favored by school children, students and people aged 20 to 45 who use computers for accessing the Internet and online communications.
