Baku backs project on rail link with Iran
Azerbaijan supports the project on building the
Baku-Rasht railway to create a direct rail link with Iran,
Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov has said.
Mammadov said talks were underway with Iran on constructing the rail line and the government had begun the work needed to pave the way for beginning the project.
As for funding issues, the minister said the Azerbaijani government could finance the project at its own expense when the opportunity presents itself. At the same time, he did not rule out that international loans would be sought.
The railway is expected to link Baku with the town of Astara, on Azerbaijan`s southern border with Iran, to Astara in Iran and further to Rasht.
