Azerbaijan among states attracting myriad of tourists
Azerbaijan is among countries with the fastest
growth in the number of tourists, with 39.4 per cent increase
reported in a year`s time, Minister of Culture and Tourism Abulfas
Garayev has said.
"The influx of tourists shows that the political and economic situation in Azerbaijan is normal and the country is conducive for tourism," Garayev told a press conference Tuesday.
He noted that the existing infrastructure and conditions allow to boost the development of tourism. "Tourists are flocking to Azerbaijan from countries around the world, even from tiny states that we can just see on the map," the minister said.
According to Garayev, the key goal is to bring the number of foreign nationals coming to Azerbaijan to 3 million over the next five years. In 2009, the number of tourists is expected to increase by 15-18 per cent.
About 1.9 million people came to Azerbaijan in 2008, of whom slightly over 1.4 million were tourists. The total number of visitors rose by 42.5 per cent in comparison with 2007.
The growth made up only 2-3 per cent worldwide.
