Azerbaijan, Belarus boosting trade
The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Belarus has increased 6.5 times in the past five years, according to Nikolay Paskevich, Belarusian Ambassador in Baku.
Addressing a news conference on the outcomes of a recent meeting of the two countries` businessmen, Paskevich said bilateral commodities turnover was on target to reach $120 million in 2009.
In 2008, Azerbaijan and Belarus conducted trade worth $111m. According to Paskevich, this is quite a considerable indicator given that bilateral trade constituted only $30m just two years ago.
Paskevich emphasized that the trade turnover was actually predicted to hit the $120m mark last year, but the global financial downturn had impeded the realization of this goal. "But the $111m level is not a bad indicator either in the conditions of the crisis."
He said further that Belarusian businessmen planned to export devices and equipment, products of the construction sector and the food industry to Azerbaijan. Artificial leather and veterinary medicine is to be delivered as well. Moreover, opening Belarusian furniture enterprises in the South Caucasus republic is envisioned.
Paskevich went on to say that the inter-governmental commission on economic cooperation would meet in Minsk over the next two months. Participants will discuss the implementation of the plan of economic collaboration to run through 2015. The two countries` governments are expected to sign numerous agreements on environmnental protection, information technologies and cooperation in the production sector at the conclusion of the discussions.
The envoy added that Azerbaijan and Belarus were also holding consultations on establishing a trade and logistics center.
