Azeris not too fond of wine
The volume of grape-growing in Azerbaijan has fallen
due to the limited demand for wine, a Ministry of Agriculture
official has said.
Sabir Valiyev said that as little as 100,000-110,000 tons of grapes are produced at present, of which 10% is consumed as fruit, while the rest is channeled into wine-making. However, the country`s consumption of wine has been satisfied with wines inherited from the Soviet period.
The official added that another reason for the low popularity of wine is the preference given by the public to vodka.
A total of 2m decaliters of vodka is consumed in Azerbaijan every year. A lion`s share of the demand is met by imports. The demand for wine is about 1m decaliters a year.
