Iran’s refinery to produce premium gasoline, jet fuel

Iran’s Lavan Oil Refinery will produce gasoline meeting euro-4 standards and jet fuel in the near future.

The refinery will start producing 2.8 million liters of euro-4 gasoline in the first half of the next Iranian fiscal year, which begins on March 21, Shana news agency reported on Feb. 23.

The refinery will also start producing jet fuel meeting international standards in the near future, the report added.

Lavan’s jet fuel can be supplied to the domestic market and be exported to regional countries, as well.

Some 30 percent of gasoline which is sold in Iran’s market meets euro-4 standards, said Naser Sajjadi, managing director of National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company.

Sajjadi said 18-20 million liters of euro-4 gasoline is being supplied to the market per day.

Iran imported 40 percent of its needed gasoline as of 2009. But, international sanctions forced it to produce gasoline domestically through adding lead or some poisonous chemical catalysts such as MTBE to the product. MTBE is a highly poisonous substance which causes cancer. It is banned worldwide in use for gasoline production.

The administration of President Hassan Rouhani ordered to stop the distribution of substandard gasoline. Rouhani has said that the situation has improved in large cities which are being supplied with euro-4 gasoline.
