Baku hosts Critical Mass competition
By Amina Nazarli
Jointly organized by the Cycling Federation and Sharkhead Cycling Club, the Baku Critical Mass cycling competition was held on September 27.
Being held for the second time in Baku, the event reminded the officials and the car owners of minor road user as cyclists.
It brought together more than 300 amateurs.
The cyclists started their tour from the Government House in a road stretching for 20km.
The purpose of the event was to build a strong cycling community in Baku. The cyclists are vulnerable along the roads filled with cars moving at high speed and producing toxic exhaust fumes. Cyclists get a lot more fun, because they feel being surrounded by friends.
The Crytical Mass has been held in up to 300 biggest cities in the world under the slogan "We support clean city" and "We are not a hindrance of the movement - we are a part of it".
The first Baku Critical Mass was held on August 31 this year, bringing together more than 200 amateur cyclists.
The event originated in San Francisco since 1992 is typically held on the last Friday of every month.
The event has been described as a "monthly protest by cyclists reclaiming the streets". Participants have insisted that these events should be viewed as "celebrations" and spontaneous gatherings, and not as protests or organized demonstrations.
