Azerbaijan wins three gold medals at Universiade 2013

Azerbaijan runner Hayle Ibrahimov has won a gold medal of the Universiade at a distance of 5,000 meters, setting a record of the Student Games.

Ibrahimov won with a score of 13 minutes and 35.89 seconds.

Azerbaijan wrestler Julia Ratkevich vying in women's wrestling was also victorious, beating Allison Ragan of the United States.

Earlier Azerbaijani weightlifter Firudin Guliyev won the Universiade competitions in the weight bracket of up to 69 kg, setting two records of the Student Games.

Azerbaijan has also won four silver and five bronze medals at the Universiade. Ulviyya Kerimova and Kristina Iovu won silver in belt wrestling and weightlifting accordingly. Wrestlers Jabrayil Hasanov and Patimat Bagomedova claimed silver as well.

The bronze went to judo wrestler Mammadali Mehdiyev, wrestlers Haji Aliyev and Irina Netreba, and sambo fighters Aghasif Samadov and Emil Hasanov.

The World Summer Universiade kicked off in Tatarstan, Russia on July 6-17. Azerbaijan is represented at the tournament with a large number of athletes.

The 27th World Summer Universiade-2013 in Kazan is the first Universiade, and in fact, the first multi-sport event in the history of modern Russia.

The Universiade is an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a combination of the words "University" and "olympiad".

The first official World Student Games were organized in 1924 and the tournament has been held under the auspices of FISU since 1949. An alternative event was arranged by the International Union of Students (IUS) in 1947-1962, including one unofficial Games, in 1954.
