Kazakh prosecutor's office reports about coup attempt

The Kazakh General Prosecutor Office has announced that several people were detained for their attempts to organize unauthorized rallies in several cities of Kazakhstan on May 21.

The report, issued by the Office on unauthorized rallies in the country, specifies that seizure of power and destabilization of socio-political situation in the country was planned in the country. The report states that certain individuals were planning to violate the law and urge people on the participation in illegal actions.

“Their actions were not aimed at the changes to the Land Code or peaceful gathering but destabilization of the situation in the country, fomentation of international discord and seizure of power,” the report says.

The Office notes that those provocations were aimed at triggering of mass riots which in their turn might lead to the mess, violence, plunder and human losses. “The current situation in such countries as Libya, Syria, Egypt and certain post-soviet countries is an obvious example of terrifying consequences of such actions,” the Office reports.

The report further reads that organization of mass riots and provocations were planned in a number of cities of Kazakhstan. The government has the information about coordinated character of actions of provokers.

General Prosecutor Office of Kazakhstan is currently engaged in the investigation of criminal cases on the organization of illegal rallies and provocations. The office thoroughly investigates the issues of illegal financing of such illegal activities and processes information on the sources of financing

Prosecutor General Zhakip Asanov earlier stated that people calling for fresh rallies were provoking illegal actions and spreading "false information which showed signs of inciting social and ethnic discord."

"Law enforcement bodies are obliged to prevent any violations and immediately take the necessary legal measures including criminal prosecution," he said in a statement published by his office.
