Russia starts supplying S-300 to Iran

By Sara Rajabova

Moscow has announced that it executes a contract for the supply of S-300 anti-aircraft missile system to Iran.

Russian media quoted Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin as saying that the contract on the delivery of the S 300 is executed and paid.

He said delivery is underway and the contract will be followed by the other moves.

Russia and Iran concluded a contract in 2007 for the supply of S-300 systems, but after the adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution 1929, which provided for the imposition of sanctions on Iran, the realization of the contract was suspended by then president Dmitry Medvedev.

In turn, Tehran went as far as filing a $4 billion lawsuit against Rosoboron Export, Russia’s intermediary agency for exports and imports of defense-related and dual use products, technologies and services, with Geneva's arbitration court.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree in mid-April to lift a ban on the supply of S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems to Iran.

A while ago, Tehran confirmed its intention to withdraw its lawsuit against Russia over the non-delivery of the S-300 air defense systems. Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said they have confirmation from the Iranian side of the withdrawal of the lawsuit, and believe that it will take place in the near future.

The decision to deliver the missile systems came after Iran and the P5+1 group of countries reached a mutual understanding on Tehran’s nuclear program in Lausanne on April 2. The nuclear deal between P5+1 and Iran, made it easier for the two countries to realize the delivery of missiles.
