Iran calls for more investment in solar energy field
By Sara Rajabova
At a time when the world's natural resources are diminishing, the countries have increased works on developing the alternative energy sector.
Some countries have already highly developed this field, becoming specialist in the alternative energy sphere.
Currently, the energy-rich countries are also become more interested in developing the alternative energy.
Iran, which possesses the second largest gas reserves worldwide and holds the world's fourth-largest proved crude oil reserves, has recently focused on fostering this field.
Head of Iran's Environmental Protection Organization, Masoumeh Ebtekar, has called for investment in Iran’s solar energy.
Shana news agency quoted her as saying that Iran is one of the best places for investment in solar energy sector.
Speaking about Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s recent directives on environmental issues she called for implementing the announced policy.
Khamenei on November 17 outlined a 15-point general environmental policy for the country.
The latest annual report said Iran’s capacity of producing renewable energy stands at 232 megawatts, 0.31 percent of the country’s total power generation capacity.
Iran is also cooperating with the foreign companies to develop the renewable energy sector.
Iran’s Ministry of Energy has recently signed an agreement with a German company to build 1,250 megawatts of solar energy projects in the Islamic Republic’s latest move to green its energy supply chain.
Under the deal, Germans will build several solar farms in Tehran, Tabriz and Isfahan, without naming the foreign firm.
Iran's total potential for producing solar and wind energy is estimated to be around 40 million and 100,000 megawatt hours. The country's power generation capacity is currently over 70 gigawatts.
It currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.
Iran is now the world's 14th biggest owner of solar power plants, according to the Iranian media.
