Yerevan not opposed to joint `genocide` research - report
Armenia deems establishing a joint commission of
historians with Turkey to study the alleged genocide of Armenians
as possible, Turkey`s popular Zaman newspaper reported.
The report said Yerevan had indicated a change in its stance on the issue during Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian`s meeting with his Turkish counterpart Ali Babacan on Monday. Nalbandian said Armenia considered researching the developments based on historical facts in conjunction with Ankara as normal, Zaman said.
Armenians term the alleged World War I-era killings of huge numbers of their kins as genocide, a claim strenuously denied by the modern Turkish state. The proposal to jointly scrutinize the Ottoman Turkey developments was initially made by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, but it was rejected by then Armenian President Robert Kocharian.
