EU could help Tehran with nuclear safety
Iran held a session to evaluate its joining the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management.
Speaking during the meeting Director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Aliakbar Salehi said the European Union is ready to help Iran with nuclear safety, ISNA news agency reported.
He pointed out that Japan, Norway, and some other countries have already announced they are ready to help Iran with nuclear safety.
He also welcomed proposals on nuclear waste and radioactive waste management and said Iranian nuclear officials and experts should visit Sweden’s nuclear waste management facilities since Sweden is one of the leading countries in nuclear waste management.
The Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and
on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management is a 1997
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) treaty and the first
treaty to address radioactive waste management on a global
scale.
Salehi’s remarks follow the emergence of the prospect for Iran to
seek more international help with its nuclear program after the
country and the group of six powers called the group P5+1 (the US,
UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) adopted an agreement called
the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action which is expected to lift
economic sanctions on Iran and end the country’s decades-long
isolation.
