Russia, Turkey to reach new level of relations

In view of the difficult situation in Turkey and the transformation of the US position, there is some hope that Russia and Turkey will come to agreement on a number of issues and, therefore, reach a new level of relations, turkologist, director of the center for oriental studies, international relations and public diplomacy, senior lecturer of the department of oriental languages of the diplomatic academy of the Russian foreign ministry, the teacher of the military department of MGIMO Vladimir Avatkov told Trend Sept.21.

The expert said that Russia is one of the priority partners of Turkey in terms of economy. “However, a number of problems accumulated between the two countries at the moment, mainly related to the ideas and activities of third forces, in particular the United States,” he said. “One such problem is the situation in the Middle East, particularly in Syria.”

After the intensified conflict interaction in the Middle East, Russia proposed the formation of a broad coalition against the “Islamic state” (ISIS). “I am sure this will become one of the main issues on the agenda of the meeting of the presidents of Russia and Turkey in Moscow,” the expert said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Russia will take place Sept. 23. During the visit, Erdogan will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The armed conflict has been continuing in Syria since March 2011, which claimed lives of over 200,000 people, according to the UN.
