Speakers to mull creating Turkic assembly
Parliament speakers of Turkic countries will gather in Istanbul for their first conference on Thursday. Signing an agreement on establishing an inter-parliamentary assembly of Turkic-speaking nations will be a focal point at the three-day event, an official of Kazakhstan`s Foreign Ministry, Erjan Ashikbayev, told reporters.
The proposal was initially made by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev at the eighth summit of Turkic states in November 2006. Nazarbayev said the body should serve as another substantial mechanism in the development of mutually beneficial cooperation. The assembly will made up of influential politicians and public figures, as well as representatives from the academic and cultural communities.
