Armenian FM to visit Ankara Nov. 24 – report
The date for Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian`s visit to Ankara has been scheduled for November 24, according to Turkey`s CNN Turk website.
The visit is being paid under the premise of transferring the chairmanship of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization (BSEC) to Armenia.
Nalbandian is expected to discuss a number of key issues with Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan. Talks will center on the possibility of forging diplomatic ties between Turkey and Armenia, arranging the next meeting of the two countries` presidents, settling the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict and seeking an understanding regarding the alleged genocide of Armenians.
Prior to the Armenian minister`s arrival, Babacan intends to visit Azerbaijan, though the timing of the visit has yet to be determined.
Relations between Armenia and Turkey have been strained and the border between the two countries has been closed by Ankara since 1993 due to Armenia`s policy of occupation against Azerbaijan and its recurring "genocide" claims.
However, Turkish and Armenian leaders attended a 2010 World Cup qualifying soccer match together in Yerevan early in September when Abdullah Gul became the first Turkish leader to visit Armenia. Yerevan saw the visit as an opportunity to normalize relations with the neighboring country, where no diplomatic ties exist.
