Armenian, Greek monks clash at Israeli shrine
Armenian and Greek Orthodox monks clashed at a Christian church in Israel on Sunday. Police arrested two clergyman after an argument had erupted into a brawl next to the site of Jesus` tomb, according to reports.
The brawling at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher began during a procession of Armenian clergymen commemorating the 4th-century discovery of the cross believed to have been used to crucify Jesus Christ. The Greek monks objected to some elements of the march, fearing that it could give the Armenians a claim to the site. The Armenians refused to halt, and when they again tried to march the Greek Orthodox monks blocked their way, sparking the brawl. Police were forced to intervene after fighting was reported. A Greek Orthodox monk, named Serafim, said he had sustained a wound when an Armenian punched him from behind.
"We laid out our views to them very quietly, we didn`t hit anybody. But all of a sudden one of them hit me from the back, and I lost consciousness."
The feud is only one of the many clashes among churchmen in the Holy Sepulcher. Six Christian sects divide control of the ancient church. They regularly fight over turf and influence.
