Iranian negotiators may return to Tehran after missing deadline
By Sara Rajabova
Iran’s foreign policy head has said the Iranian negotiating team may return to Tehran on April 3. This comes as the six world powers and Iran missed March 31 deadline to reach a preliminary deal on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program.
Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif expressed hope on April 2 for reaching a final deal before the July deadline.
Zarif added that if things go well, reaching a final deal before the July deadline is possible, IRNA news agency reported.
He underscored that Iran and the P5+1 have reviewed several solutions during Lausanne negotiations, stressing that the remaining issues need to be discussed in order to reach a final agreement before the July deadline.
Zarif, however, noted that Tehran and the six world powers are not due to sign any agreement today, adding that the seven nations might only issue a statement.
Meanwhile, the Iranian MP wants approval of any agreement on Iran’s nuclear program by the country’s parliament.
Ahmad Tavakkoli said any international agreement, including possible agreement on the nuclear issue should be approved by parliament.
In a letter to President Hassan Rouhani, the MP has emphasized that if the outcome of the ongoing nuclear talks establishes commitments on the part of Iran it should be approved by parliament.
However, Ali Larijani, Iranian parliament speaker earlier said there is no need for parliament's approval if Iran and the P5+1 negotiators achieve a comprehensive nuclear deal.
Representatives from Iran and the P5+1 group continue holding successive rounds of talks in Lausanne to narrow the existing differences on Tehran’s nuclear activities.
The potential agreement paves the way for a much broader deal by the end of June which guarantees the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear activities in return for a promise by international powers to lift unfair sanctions against the country.
