Georgia set to secede from CIS in August 2009
Georgia will secede from the Commonwealth of Independent States
(CIS) in August 2009. The decision was approved during the meeting
of the ex-Soviet bloc`s foreign ministers in Bishkek on
Thursday.
CIS Executive Secretary, Sergei Lebedev, said Tbilisi`s move would not cause the bloc to be harmed, as no other CIS member states have stated their intention to secede during the ministerial.
Lebedev added that CIS states were interested in restoring good neighborliness and constructive relationship with Georgia.
"The doors of the CIS are not closed for Georgia. If the country`s leadership decides to return to the CIS, this issue will find a positive solution," he said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, while commenting on Georgia`s move, that the pullout is Tbilisi`s own decision which, however, is disappointing, as every nation has benefitted from CIS membership.
"However, the step taken by Georgia cannot adversely affect the bloc`s activity, considering that this country`s presence in the CIS in the past one to two years has been contributing not to its strengthening, but undermining it," Lavrov said.
Azerbaijan was represented at the meeting of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council by Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.
