NATO high-ranking official to visit Georgia
By Mushvig Mehdiyev
David Bakradze, Georgia’s State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, said a high-ranking NATO official is set to visit Georgia in the coming weeks.
Alexander Vershbow, NATO Deputy Secretary General, will arrive in Georgia in three weeks to meet with the country's top officials on bilateral ties.
Implementation process of the Substantial Package, offered by the NATO at the Wales Summit on September 2014, is expected to be high on agenda during discussions.
"We will continue our consultation on the implementation of the Substantial Package. NATO-Georgian Commission, Annual National Programme and Substantial Package are required conditions for achieving NATO membership,” Bakradze said.
Vershbow posted on his Twitter account that NATO is fully committed to Georgia’s future membership at the alliance.
Georgia’s Foreign Minister Tamar Beruchashvili described a statement by Vershbow as a very significant victory for the Georgian government.
"NATO Deputy Secretary General’s statement emphasized that NATO has committed to Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations, as well as its reforms. I believe that the reforms implemented by our authorities have brought us a great victory,” Beruchashvili said.
NATO support is what Georgia needs amid the recent tense political relations with Russia following the treaty between Russia and its separatist Abkhazia region. Georgian authorities announced the country's Euro-Atlantic integration irreversible, as the western forces promise sustainable and impartial backing to the South Caucasus nation.
