Margvelashvili urges to seriously protect human rights in Georgia
By Mushvig Mehdiyev
Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili said the supreme value of modern Georgia is human rights, and freedom.
Addressing the event, organized by the Public Defender of Georgia, Margvelashvili put special stress on the protection of human rights. "Over the past two years we have taken very serious steps towards the protection of the rights of each individual, but complacency is the greatest threat to human rights protection,” he said.
Margvelashvili noted that Georgia will experience similar disappointment related to other traditional values, if society remains complacent, saying that the Georgian society is proud of its tolerance towards religious and ethnic issues.
"Georgia has always been a land, where other ethnicities found their place and home, we are complacent in some cases," he noted.
He pledged to support the Public Defender, saying that the current imbalance and problems relating to human rights protection must be eradicated.
Margvelashvili also said the society should unite in every case of violence, no matter if it involves women or prisoners, or related to religious or ethnic issues, and problems should be overcome by joint efforts of each structure and institution.
