Obama praises Gul`s Yerevan visit
US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has praised
Turkish President Abdullah Gul`s recent visit to Armenia.
Obama described Gul`s meeting with Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian in Yerevan as "a hopeful step."
He said the meeting between Turkish and Armenian leaders could bring "normalization," in reference to resolving the historical differences between the neighboring countries.
Obama`s statement was delivered in a message on the anniversary of Armenia`s independence, the Turkish Anatolian news agency reported.
A warming of relations between Turkey and Armenia began after the Turkish leader briefly visited Armenia early in September.
Turkey and Armenia do not have diplomatic relations due to Armenia`s occupation of Azerbaijan territory.
Touching on Yerevan`s claims that Ottoman Turks committed mass killings of Armenians during World War I, Obama, this time, did not mention in his written statement that he would recognize the alleged "genocide" if elected president, a promise he had repeatedly made earlier. The presidential nominee confined himself to saying that "Armenians who faced genocide have not been defeated."
