Sarkisian says `it`s time` to solve problems with Turkey
Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian has said it was time to resolve
his country`s problems with Turkey.
Addressing a reception at Armenia`s legation in the United Nations, he recalled that during recent talks in Yerevan with his Turkish counterpart, Abdullah Gul, the parties agreed "not to transfer outstanding differences to future generations." During the meeting, both leaders stated their readiness to make challenging decisions, he said.
"All this allows me to hope that we will not transfer existing problems to future generations and drag on time," Sarkisian claimed.
He maintained that, following the talks held between the two countries in Armenia, the Turkish foreign minister said Ankara was ready to review the developments of the past and to face the feedback of the planned commission. He was referring to the prospects of establishing a joint commission of historians to study the World War I developments in Ottoman Turkey that Yerevan claims amounted to "genocide of Armenians."
"These are the words of a daring government official," Sarkisian said.
