South Korean Super iMAX Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Korea Telecom, is set to launch the Internet access network technology - 4G LTE TDD - in Uzbekistan in 2015, the company said on November 7.

Super iMAX is an operator offering Internet communication services in Uzbekistan employing wireless technologies.

The company plans to make the 4G LTE TDD available to subscribers in Uzbekistan’s Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara cities in 2015.

By 2016, this technology will cover other regions of the country, replacing the existing WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) wireless communications standard.

“The LTE TDD network deployment will be the first among the CIS countries,” the company said.

The Korea Telecom is expected to invest $10 million in this project.

Super iMAX was established in 2007 by Korea Telecom and Sumitomo Corporation Korea Ltd. with stakes of 60 percent and 40 percent respectively. Later, Sumitomo Corporation Korea Ltd. withdrew.

Currently, the Super iMAX is the sole owner of Korea Telecom.

Super iMAX is licensed to design, construct, render works, and offer services to local and international telecommunication networks and data transmission networks.

The operator provides its subscribers with wireless Internet access employing the WiMAX standard under the EVO brand. Since 2008, Korea Telecom has invested $21 million in the development of the IT technologies in Uzbekistan.

South Korea is one of the largest investment partners of Uzbekistan. The total volume of South Korean investments made in the economy of Uzbekistan since 1991 exceeded $6 billion.

To date, Uzbekistan and South Korea have signed over 300 bilateral documents. The trade turnover between the two countries amounted to $2.12 billion in 2013.
