Georgia, OSCE opt for constructive talks with Russia

By Mushvig Mehdiyev

Georgian President Girogi Margvelashvili has met with OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier in Vienna.

Talks on the situation in Georgia's separatist Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions topped the meeting's agenda. Margvelashvili said Georgia could not normalize its relations with Russia despite its activities to de-escalate the tensions with the giant northern neighbor.

"Russia plans to sign treaty "On partnership and integration" with Abkhazia by the end of this year. It means a direct annexation of Abkhazia," he noted.

The Georgian government voiced its appreciation of OSCE's involvement in the ongoing processes and great importance the country attaches to its effective mission in Georgia.

The two diplomats also noted that Moscow should get a clear signal for launching constructive talks based on Geneva format. It was stressed that Georgia accepts the Geneva format as only way for humanitarian and security discussions with Russia.

Geneva International Discussions was first held in 2008 based on agreements reached after the war in Georgia, in August 2008.

Georgian armed forces launched military actions in the territory of its South Ossetia region on August 8, 2008. They clashed with Russian military troops and were forced to leave the region. Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. Tbilisi strictly condemned Russia's actions and broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow to recognize Abkazia and South Ossetia as occupied territories.
