Conflicts pose threat to regional security

By Mushvig Mehdiyev

Georgian State Minister for European Integration Issues, Alexi Petriashvili, said none of the infrastructures in Georgia was directed against Russia.

He was commenting on the recent statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry, which said that the deployment of the military infrastructure in Georgia within the interests of NATO will pose a threat to the stability in the Trans-Caucasian region.

"None of the military infrastructures deployed or to be deployed in Georgia will pose a threat to the neighboring Russia and they are for strengthening the country's defensibility. Joint drills of the NATO member-states target to increase the regional stability and security," Petriashvili said.

He added that the withdrawal of the Russian troops from the bases in Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine would contribute to the intensification of the security and stability in the region.

The Georgian-Russian relations pushed all limits when Georgian troops launched military operations to retake the breakaway regions on August 8, 2008. Russian forces entered South Ossetia and Abkhazia to block military attacks by Georgian troops. After four days of intense fighting, Georgian forces were expelled from South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia conducted massive air strikes on the military and logistical targets inside Georgia. Both sides agreed to a ceasefire on August 12. Russia, now, dominates the collective peacekeeping missions in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
