The establishment of the Afghanistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia transport corridor was the main topic of discussions of a quadripartite meeting held in Ashgabat.

This project is aimed at providing new opportunities for entrance of the participating countries and other countries of the region to the world markets, and at the same time it aims to boost the trade and economic relations in the Eurasian space, the Turkmen government reported.

This project is expected to contribute to the social and economic revival of Afghanistan and its joining major regional and international infrastructure projects.

Earlier in August, Afghan Trade and Industry Minister Mohammad Shaker Kargar was in Ashgabat on a working visit to discuss the development of this project with the Turkmen side.

Ashgabat hosted an international conference on the role of transport and transit corridors on September 3-4. The conference aimed to ensure international cooperation and sustainable development brought together representatives of over 30 countries' transport ministries and international organizations.

Azerbaijan was represented at the event by a delegation comprising of Azerbaijan's ambassador to Turkmenistan, deputy head of State Marine Administration, as well as State Customs Committee's and Azerbaijan Railways' officials.

The two-day international conference was organized by Turkmen Foreign Ministry and the Road Transport Ministry. The UN, OSCE, the International Road Transport Union (IRU) and the Intergovernmental Commission on Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA) assisted in holding the conference.
