Armenian governors' illegal wealth

By Nazrin Gadimova

It is known that the governors of Armenia are quite wealthy officials. Moreover, some part of their wealth was formed exactly after their appointment, and probably due to the fact that they take advantage of formal credentials to serve their own interests, local media reported.

Perhaps, Governor of Syunik Province (marz) Vahe Hakobyan is one of the richest governors of Armenia. In any case, this can be gauged by examining his income and assets declaration. Despite the fact that his residence is Kajaran city, his property is spread not only in this province, but also in the Armenian capital and its surroundings.

Hakobyan submitted this declaration to the Central Election Commission during the parliamentary elections in 2012, as he was included in the proportional list of country's Republican Party.

According to this declaration, he owned seven real estate units in Syunik, three of which are plots of land, and four are buildings. Three of them are situated in Kapan, and four - in Sisian. Thus, Syunik's governor is the sole owner of all of the seven units.

He also included six expensive cars in the same declaration. These are Mercedes G500, Toyota Camry, Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Golf and GAZ-3102. Hakobyan also has stocks in the Armeniq Molybden Production, ArmBusinessBank and ACBA-Credit Agricole Bank. Moreover, it is possible that there are other properties not mentioned in the declaration.

Syunik governor is the son of Head of the Zangezur Copper Molybdenum Combine Maxim Hakobyan, who is the former Syunik governor. The father and the son were no less rich before, thanks to revenues from the plant. Hakobyan-father himself is quite a rich man. And today this family is one of the richest families not only in Syunik Marz, but in the whole Armenia. However, this wealth has been amassed as a result of the exploitation of national wealth.

Hakobyans founded their clan system in this Armenian province, however, not as a criminal but as the clan of Suren Khachatryan.

Together with Khachatryan Hakobyans actually coordinate political, socio-economic and even moral-psychological sphere of the province. Nothing significant can be bought and sold without their participation. Meanwhile no alliances can be formed or elections can be held without their consent.

They are the backbone of these authorities, and therefore enjoy enormous power using legal and illegal ways.
